Singapore’s The Straits times and Hong Kong’s Apple Daily were the only Asian winners at the Pacific Area Newspaper Association Awards in Sydney last night, an awards show dominated by Australasian publishers.

Straits Times won in the best digital innovation category for its Communities platform and Apple Daily, famous for its animated recreations of news stories, was named news site of the year.

ST Communities, which launched less than two years ago, is a site for readers to get published with journalists’ stories on content such as the arts and education. In its story about its win, the Straits Times wrote that a new addition to ST Communities for travel is to launch soon.

Straits Times publisher Singapore Press Holdings and Apple Daily claimed two other awards. PANPA’s marketer of the year went to Johnson Goh and Swee Gim. Apple Daily was recognised in the technical excellence category.
