Vaseline ‘healthy white’ lotion ad promises Singaporeans 4X fairer skin in an instant
Unilever brand Vaseline is running a campaign on Singapore’s train network and social media for a lotion that whitens the skin.
Posters for Vaseline Instant Fair Lotion show a pale arm crossed over a darker arm and the words “Instantly 4X fairer skin that keeps getting fairer”.
Other posters describe the product as giving skin a “healthy white” and “instant fair” look.
The product is endorsed by local beauty blogger Roseanne Tang, who is quoted in one poster saying the product “really does make me look fairer”.
A 30-second video blog by Tang was posted on YouTube in February in which she says the product makes skin “instantly fair on the spot”.
An ad for the product first debuted in Singapore in 2013.
One poster on YouTube commented: “So you mean that “1” out of 9 women are ugly because of her unfair skin colour. Please stop this kind of unfair ads!”
Temporarily setting aside the ethical issue of cultivating insecurity among dark people, how is it even possible to claim “instantly 4X fairer skin” unless what you’re selling is white paint?
ReplyWhere on one hand we have brands like Dove talking about inner beauty, this ad from Vaseline is appalling and very disappointing!
ReplyYou could do better Vaseline!!
