Sony Pictures appoints Mike Wald to lead APAC distribution

Sony Pictures Television has announced a number of appointments in its distribution arm. Mike Wald has been appointed to oversee APAC distribution.

The announcement:

CULVER CITY, CA (September 29, 2015) — Sony Pictures Television (SPT) today announced several appointments within its international distribution business. The moves, which span Asia-Pacific, EMEA and Canada, underscore SPT’s commitment to grow and strengthen its international distribution team and the key leaders within it.

Mike Wald, executive vice president, international distribution, will return from London to Los Angeles and oversee the distribution and strategic management of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s (SPE) feature films and TV series to international free television, basic cable, subscription pay television and new media platforms, look at global opportunities and partnerships, and head up SPT’s distribution across Asia-Pacific.

Angel Orengo, executive vice president, international distribution, EMEA, will move from Hong Kong, where he oversaw the Asia-Pacific territory, and will now be based in the company’s London office, where he will lead SPT’s EMEA team as executive vice president of international distribution.

Alexander Marin, executive vice president, international distribution in Latin America and the Caribbean, will now also oversee Canada.
The announcement was made by Keith LeGoy, president of international distribution, to whom the three report.

Additionally, Robert Lanier was appointed senior vice president of international distribution, Asia-Pacific, covering Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Lanier will work out of the company’s Sydney office and report to Wald, as will Ken Lo, senior vice president of international distribution, Asia-Pacific, overseeing SPT’s distribution in China, India, Korea and Southeast Asia, and based in Hong Kong.

Mike Wald was most recently based in London and served as executive vice president of international distribution across Europe, the Middle East and Africa for SPT. In this role, he headed SPT’s distribution efforts across the region for the studio’s feature films and TV series to international free television, basic cable, subscription pay television, in addition to new media platforms, SVOD and TVOD. Prior to that, Wald served as the director of corporate development for SPT both in Culver City and in Hong Kong, from 1994 to 1998, where he focused on emerging entertainment markets in Asia and helped launch SET India and the AXN channel in Asia.

Angel Orengo most recently served as executive vice president, international distribution in Asia-Pacific for SPT, based at SPT’s regional headquarters in Hong Kong, where he oversaw SPT’s distribution efforts in all of Asia, plus Australia, New Zealand and India. Previously he was SPT’s vice president and then senior vice president of distribution in Latin America and the Caribbean, based at SPT’s Latin American headquarters in Miami. From 2000 to 2003, Orengo was SPT’s regional director, Mexico, where he opened and established the local SPT advertising sales operation in Mexico City. From 1999 to 2000, he was SPT’s director, pan-regional ad sales, based in Miami. He joined SPT’s Miami office in 1998 as senior account executive.

Alexander Marin is based at SPT’s Latin American headquarters in Miami, where he has headed the distribution of all SPT content across all platforms and windows in the region since 2009. Previously, he was based at SPT’s European headquarters in London where he was vice president, distribution. Prior to that, from 1999 to 2007, he was based at SPT’s Mexico City office, where he was general manager of distribution. Before joining SPT, Marin was executive director of marketing and on-air for Fox’s Latin American channels, based in LA. He also held the role of director of sales at Turner International at its Mexico City office.

Robert Lanier most recently served as senior vice president, new media and Pay TV, international distribution, working closely with SPT’s offices around the world to structure and negotiate all licensing deals and developing new opportunities. Prior to that, he was a business development executive for Sony Connect, now known as the PlayStation Network, where he was responsible for strategic partnerships. Lanier first joined Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2001 in business development, where he handled strategic planning for the studio’s first digital content offerings as well as mergers and acquisitions.

Ken Lo served as senior vice president, international distribution for Greater China, Korea and Southeast Asia since 2013, during which time he has been fundamental to building SPT’s distribution business across the region and across all platforms. Prior to that, he was vice president, business development in Asia, where he headed the business development efforts in the region for new business and partnership initiatives across SPT’s distribution, networks, and production activities. Lo first joined Sony Pictures Television in its Hong Kong office in 2004.
