EDB marketing chief Myrna Poon moves to DBS

Myrna PoonMyrna Poon, the head of marketing for Singapore’s Economic Development Board, is leaving the organisation after a distinguished 18-year term with the government body in two stints.

Poon has been executive director of marketing and communications for the last two and half years, and has been serially promoted since 2002, when she re-joined the company in a role to attract IT businesses to Singapore.

Update: Poon has joined DBS as SVP, head of brand and digital. She will report Karen Ngui, head of group strategic marketing and communications.

EDB has yet to announced a replacement for the marketer, who is widely respected for her accomplishments in raising the profile of Singapore as a global business hub.

The news emerges just two months after EDB announced a new line-up of agency partners, with Hakuhodo, Havas, Doremus and The Secret Little Agency appointed to handle the business in various key markets where the Singapore brand is being built as an investment hub.

EDB is now working closer together with the Singapore Tourism Board to develop an overarching brand for Singapore, Mumbrella understands. The new brand positioning, which is under development, aims to build a country brand that incorporates the business appeal of brand Singapore as well as its tourist attractions.

Poon began her career with EDB as a strategic planner in the mid-nineties, with a two-year stint in New York before returning to Singapore.

In a statement shared with Mumbrella, Ngui said: “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Myrna Poon as our new Head of Brand & Digital. Her extensive experience and outstanding credentials put her in a good position to further strengthen our brand presence locally and across the region. Myrna’s appointment also signifies the bank’s commitment to pushing the boundaries in the digital realm, and I am confident in her ability to extend our reach as we further entrench our leadership position in the industry.”
