BBDO Vietnam founder David Smail departs after 10 years to move back to US

David SmailDavid Smail, one of Vietnam most well-established creative leaders, is moving back to the US after almost a decade as ECD and chairman of BBDO Vietnam.

Smail left J. Walter Thompson Vietnam in 2007 to set up BBDO’s Vietnamese operation in Ho Chi Min City, with Fonterra as the founding client. Since then, the agency has worked with clients including PepsiCo, Visa, Electrolux, KFC, Sarley-Davidson, Oppo, Mercedes-Benz and Mars, and has around 30 staff.

Smail, who was the first Vietnam-based creative to win a Lion at Cannes, brings to an end 19 years in the country, and is returning to the US for family reasons.

BBDO Vietnam has an interim ECD in place for the next few months while the search is underway for a permanent replacement, the network’s regional boss Jean-Paul Burge told Mumbrella.
