Changing of the guard at TBWA KL creative leadership

TBWA Kuala Lumpur has undergone a change of leadership within its creative team. The agency’s associate creative director Maharis Azman left the agency last week to join an as-of-yet undisclosed digital agency.

Azman had been with the agency for two years. Although he resigned from the post in December last year, Azman told Mumbrella Asia that TBWA’s legal row with the Malaysian motorcycle group Mutha Puaka, whose slogan the agency was said to have copied, led to him departing earlier than originally intended.

He added: “I believe the situation could’ve been handled with better integrity to avoid it escalating to the current point.” The issue is now being dealt with by the company’s lawyers.

Azman himself was not involved with the Tealive account.

Although it has not directly replaced him, the agency has appointed Ng He Xiang as creative group head. Known by the name ‘Hex’, Ng joins TBWA KL from app taxi service Grab and has previously worked at network agencies Bates, Lowe and Leo Burnett. She will be responsible for driving the creative for several key brands within the TBWA Group and will report to chief creative officer Gigi Lee.

The agency has also appointed Shireen Ang and Ho Siew Voon as senior art directors. Ang joins the agency from Y&R Malaysia, while Ho previously worked for TBWA Network agency Media Arts Lab.

Ho Siew Voon

Last November, a raft of leadership changes took place at TBWA KL including the appointment of Lee as CCO. At the same time, Hui Tsin Yee was promoted from general manager to chief operating officer and Sa’ad Hussein’s moved from the CCO to chairman of TBWA Group Malaysia.
