Dr Mumbo has heard on the grapevine – by that, he means LinkedIn – that there is a role going in Singapore for a reporter who is able to take on inclement weather.
According to the job ad, the journalist must be “persistent, confident and with high emotional intelligence, as well as being able to accept negative remarks and work past minor setbacks”.
Not only that, the ad goes on: “The journalist should be able to travel frequently to gather news and cover events, may be required to work under all kinds of weather conditions and erratic work hours.”
To Dr Mumbo, this conjures up images of a meteorological correspondent standing in the middle of Fort Canning Park at 1am whistling along to Singin’ in the Rain, as the famous Singaporean precipitation hammers down. Something akin to this:
However, it’s actually a job for a reporter on Marketing magazine.
Dr Mumbo knows the marcomms industry can be bloody rigorous at times, but wonders what exactly Marketing has in store for the successful candidate. Perhaps to interview the marketing director of BMW on top of Bukit Timah Hill in the middle of a monsoon? Or perhaps to brave a typhoon in the Philippines while in search of the next scoop about Mondelēz?
Young hopefuls, form an orderly queue. Just don’t forget your umbrellas. What a glorious feelin’, I’m happy again…
