Japanese advertising giant Dentsu has appointed its first regional talent officer.

Ujjwal Sarao, who used to HR in Asia for Aegis – the company Dentsu acquired two months ago – joins the agency with a brief to manage talent acquisition and employee engagement across Asia, excluding Japan. She will be based in Singapore.

Previously Dentsu’s HR was managed out on a market by market basis.

The appointment was made by Dick Van Motman, who is eight months into his role as chairman and CEO of Dentsu Asia.

Van Motman said in a press release: “Dentsu Network has a diverse and multicultural talent base across the region, with over 1,300 colleagues across 22 offices in this region. A priority for Dentsu Network is human capital development, given that our industry is built on the capabilities and motivations of individuals and teams.”

“I am delighted to welcome Ujjwal to the team, as she brings a wealth of experience in organisational design and development, from both media and agency-side perspectives. She is also the perfect representation of Dentsu’s vision of embracing diversity as it executes on results-driven innovation in the workplace.”

Sarao joins after a period running her own consultancy in Singapore. As well as a four-year spell at Aegis as regional HR director APAC, she used to run HR for CNBC Asia and ESPN STAR Sports India.

The news comes soon after Dentsu acquired London-based media network Aegis in a $4.8bn deal. The merger expanded Dentsu’s global headcount to 36,000.
