Omnicom agencies came out on top in the APAC categories at the Mumbrella Awards last night.

DDB was crowned APAC Creative Agency of the Year and PHD was named Media Network of the Year.

DDB emerged in front of a shortlist that included Y&R and Saatchi & Saatchi, while PHD pipped Carat and OMD.

The winners were announced last night after live presentations made to a panel of five regional marketers yesterday.

The jury said that as a network, “DDB made the most of its cross cultural wisdom, with local insights driving great ideas. They showed empathy for diverse cultures and came across as ‘talented and nice’.”

“This marks another year of improvement, and they showed that they were up to the challenge of staying on top of their game: DDB is a network with a plan,” the panel concluded.

Commenting on why PHD was named APAC’s top media network, the jury said: “It was another very closely fought contest. We liked PHD’s approach with communication and collaboration in thinking leading to creative ideas.”

“We were impressed by their belief in data above media, their relaxed confidence, and the purity of putting thinking first. They have a strong culture of like-minded people.”

The APAC judging panel included Grant Watts, head of global advertising at SingTel Group Digital L!fe, the Asia Pacific marketing director of Beam Global James Sykes, Matthew Groskorth, global innovation director, Asia Pacific for Ansell, Peta Alexander, executive marketing director, Walt Disney Motion Pictures and Michael Edmonds, general manager global marketing Meat & Livestock Australia.

The jury was captained by pitch doctor Darren Woolley of consultancy TrinityP3.

The awards for Australian agencies and brands were dominated by Dumb Ways To Die, the viral campaign for Metro Trains created by McCann.

The ad won in three categories while McCann Australia’s executive creative director John Mescall was named Thinker of the Year.
