Channel NewsAsia opens Burma bureau

Thein Sein on Channel NewsAsia

Thein Sein talks to Channel NewsAsia

Singapore-based regional broadcaster Channel NewsAsia has opened a bureau in Myanmar.

The MediaCorp-owned station becomes one of only four foreign broadcasters to get a license to operate in the Southeast Asian country.

The bureau will be based in Yangon, and will be CNA’s 14th office in the region.

CNA MD Debra Soon said: “We are extremely excited about being one of the first broadcasters to be granted a bureau licence. Myanmar is beginning to see phenomenal reforms since sanctions were lifted.”

“With international investors and tourists alike flocking there to take advantage of the abundant opportunities, we want to be able to capture all these developments right at the source, and to show the historic moments on the channel for the rest of Asia and elsewhere. It is consistent with our plans to bring insights about Asia to the world and the world to Asia,” she said.

Channel NewsAsia was the first international broadcaster to get an exclusive interview with Myanmar President Thein Sein last year.
