Dave McCaughan leaves Japan after a decade for MD role at McCann Hong Kong

Dave McCaughanDave McCaughan, the Tokyo-based regional planning director at McCann, is moving to a role as managing director of the agency’s Hong Kong office.

McCaughan moves to the territory after a decade in Japan, where he was regional director for Truth Central; regional planning director, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care and general manager, McCann Erickson.

He will continue as regional director of thought leadership unit Truth Central, and work alongside creative director Spencer Wong.

McCaughan said: “Hong Kong is a fabulous market. Having spent three wonderful years here previously, I’m looking forward to returning. Our office, led by one of Asia’s greatest creative directors in Spencer Wong, is a hive of activity and opportunity. Ambitious plans have been set for 2014; Spencer and I look forward to seeing these plans come to fruition.”

His move follows the shift of the Hong Kong-based MD of McCann’s Cathay Pacific team, Vince Viola, back to Australia and ECD Thierry Halbroth to the Thai agency in recent months. Brandon Cheung has joined the agency as director, digital strategy, and Christopher Howard as head of digital media strategy for McCann’s Cathay Central Team.

McCann’s regional boss Charles Cadell said: “Hong Kong is an important hub for us. Dave’s move into a senior management role deepens our management line up helping us to elevate and strengthen our capabilities further for our clients.”

A McCann loyalist, McCaughan spent nine years with McCann in Sydney, before moving to Asia in 1995 as regional consumer insights director. He was later appointed to run the agency’s Thai operation.

He moved to Hong Kong as regional planning director in 1999, and to Japan four years later.
