Dentsu has hired its first regional comms director as the agency looks to build its profile outside its home market, Japan.

Former Esquire and WIRED journalist Thijs Plug joins the agency as regional director of marketing communications.

He moves from Jakarta to Singapore, where he will be based.

Plug will report to fellow Dutchman Dick van Motman, who is a just over a year into his role of chairman and CEO of Dentsu Network/Asia.

In an interview with Mumbrella yesterday, van Motman said: We need to become as influential in the rest of the region  as Dentsu is in Japan. If I meet people randomly in the street in Tokyo and say I’m from Dentsu, they are impressed. The company has power and resonance. We need that in the rest in Asia.”

“But we need delivery before the hype. Our clients need to get what they deserve – that will attract more clients and talent. Then we can be what we should be,” he said.

Plug said in a press release on his appointment: “Dentsu’s mantra of blending tradition with innovation has created a unique global network, and I am excited to be part of its growth. This is an advertising, communications and media network that is truly exceptional.”

“Dentsu was one of the partners in projects that created a pop group, won an Oscar, and sent a robot into space – the possibilities are endless. I look forward to seeing what tomorrow has in store for us,” he said.
