Gleeful imitation?
Dr Mumbo is a big fan of the ‘Labels against women’ ad for Pantene in the Philippines, which went viral earlier this month.
Perhaps not as big a fan as the Huffington Post, though: “Every now and again, an ad agency well and truly nails it,” they wrote breathlessly about a week ago. “To the creative team behind Pantene’s #WhipIt campaign, we salute you,” they said.
But there are murmurings in the Philippines that the ad might bear a few similarities to the idea and execution behind a video for US reality TV series The Glee Project – such as the idea of wearing labels and the ‘Mad World’ soundtrack. The former boss of Leo Burnett Manila Greg Garcia used the word “plagiarism” in a Facebook post about the ad)
Dr Mumbo will leave it to the reader to decide if the naysayers have a point.
Here’s the ad for the P&G shampoo brand (14.1m views and counting), created by BBDO Guerrero.
And here’s the Glee video.
Gleeful imitation?
even stevie wonder can see the huge similarities… and the blatant disregard for the sensitivities of the original creators.
