MediaCom APAC mobile director Andy Newton moves to Millennial Media

Andy NewtonAndy Newton, the Asia Pacific director of mobile at MediaCom, is moving to mobile advertising firm Millennial Media.

The move brings to an end just over two years for Newton at MediaCom, who joined the WPP media agency from the British Council where he was director of mobile services in January 2012.

He will continue to be based in Singapore and joins a Millennial Media team led by Asia Pacific managing director Robert Woolfrey.

Newton takes on the role of vice-president, strategic accounts, Asia Pacific.

It is unclear if MediaCom are going to find a direct replacement for Newton, who reported to head of digital Rahul Vasudev, at the time of going to press. But the agency is evaluating its options.

Vasudev told Mumbrella in a statement: “Mobile as a media channel is already embedded into the digital planning and buying workstream, and our operations teams have taken on the challenge of ad-delivery technology in the mobile space. The biggest imperative for MediaCom right now is to bring new skill-sets into the organization, which help our clients develop opportunities in this space that go beyond mobile as just another media platform.”

Before moving to Singapore in 2010, Newton worked as a mobile learning consultant for the British Council in Hong Kong. He has spent much of his career with the British Council working on regional and global mobile projects.

In an interview with Mumbrella last year, Newton pondered whether wearable technology was a fad or the future. He said of Google Glass: “I don’t think Google Glass will scale in its current form, simply because not everyone will want to wear glasses. At the moment, it’s useful for certain industries, but it won’t be a mass market product.”
