Women’s Aid Organisation: no excuse for abuse
The Kuala Lumpur office of TBWA has launched a campaign in the form of an installation at a shopping mall that opposes domestic violence against women in Malaysia.
The campaign for Women’s Aid Organisation, which launched on International Women’s Day, featured white t-shirts with ‘voices’ of survivors hand-stitched in red thread at an exhibition at Publika Mall in KL.
The campaign used the hashtag, #NoExcuseforAbuse, and targets those who are questioning the relationships they are in.
One of the t-shirts reads: “It’s alright; he apologised. He said he’ll never do it again.” Another reads: “It’s only a broken arm. At least he’s not having an affair.”
The installation art will run at Publika Mall and Hero Market at Sri Damansara, before moving on to Kampung Baru, Puchong. Posters of women, including a number of politicians, wearing the t-shirts have been shared on social media and announcements about the campaign made on local radio.
An SMS helpline was also launched for the campaign; victims of domestic violence can call TINA, or ‘Think I Need Aid’, on 018 988 8058.
Ivy Josiah, executive director at WAO said: “It is crucial that we learn to identify the signs of abuse early. If left alone, they may escalate to dangerous levels. I am confident that the art installation and online engagement will stir the right emotions and make women more aware and take action when they know that there is help out there.”
TBWA\Kuala Lumpur was behind a shocking video to raise awareness of ‘stranger danger’ in Malaysia in November last year.
