Linda Lim, the new CEO of Myanmar’s first social network, MySquar, has pinpointed localisation as the top priority following the exit of the company’s founders, and says revenue will come from advertising and, eventually, the sale of virtual goods.

The former Visa, Gap and Oracle executive has taken the reigns of MySquar since the abrupt departure of co-founders Rita Nguyen and Quyn-Anh Nguyen, who left just a year after starting up the company.

Lim said that the co-founders “are pursuing other projects outside the company” and laid down her ambitions for the year ahead.

“What the next 12 months for MySQUAR will look like can be summed up in one word; localisation. We’re at a really exciting point in the business and if you look at the rest of the landscape here you’ll notice that localisation is becoming more and more important,” she told Mumbrella.

“The Myanmar tech scene is growing up too – it’s very different to when we started a year ago, and our company reflects that,” she said.

MySquar has been hiring local talent and is offering mentorship and training for interns from the Samsung Tech Institute app development program. The company currently has two interns on staff.

“When we entered the market, we had to learn fast and adapt quickly to the changing technological situations of a start up in a frontier country. Now we’re more stable and comfortable in our market. We finally have time to really relax into the community and start being creative about how our company and our products can reflect the wonderful community we’re so lucky to work for; young Myanmar.”

Lim said the company planned to pursue audience growth through user acquisitions and engagement, and revenue from advertising and – in the longer term – the sale of virtual goods.

“We will also continue to support the app development eco-system through our app store, MyStore,” she said.
