Malay Mail asks ‘Are Malaysians racist?’ in Malaysia Day campaign
Online news website The Malay Mail has released a video to challenge the idea that Malaysia is a racist country as Malaysia Day approaches.
The video comprises a series of interviews with Malaysians of different ethnic backgrounds, asking them to make stereotypically racist remarks about Malaysians of either Chinese, Malay or Indian descent.
The video has been viewed more than 150,000 times since it was uploaded two days ago, on 7 September.
This confirms what I suspected. Most Malaysians are not racists although the racist politicians are the ones making the headlines. Even then, I can’t help but suspect that even those political animals are not really racist but believe that they can gather support by playing to the ethnic gallery.. This video makes me proud of my fellow Malaysians.
ReplyThis video tells me that the Malay mail has no idea about how racism works and manifests itself in today’s complex world. I think racism has greatly moved on from the overt days of plantation owners and slaves….it’s a lot lot lot more subtle now. First of all, no one will commit to a racist act when someone else is looking on and has full knowledge of their words or actions. That’s considered crass.
If you want to see racism at its finest, observe people on buses and subway trains. See how they prefer to stand when there’s a seat available next to a person of another race…stuff like that….the hardest thing about racism is that it’s really hard to prove.
