CNN to launch in the Philippines

CNN PhilippinesTurner Broadcasting’s 24-hour news channel CNN is planning to open a bureau in the Philippines.

In partnership with local free-to-air broadcaster Nine Media Corporation, CNN Philippines is to be available “predominantly” in English on terrestrial, cable and pay TV in the archipelago.

The TV channel, which will be supported by the website, will operate from a studio in Manila. It will replace 9TV on the Radio Philippines Network.

“The global newsgathering power of CNN combined with the local perspective Nine Media Corporation brings, enables us to provide first-class news and information to millions of Filipinos in a way that we have not been able to previously,” Jeff Zucker, CNN Worldwide president, said in a press statement.

The news emerges eight months after CNN unveiled plans to launch its first local language channel in Southeast Asia, CNN Indonesia.

The Philippines launch “is yet another example of Turner’s commitment to growth in the Asia Pacific region,” commented Gerhard Zeiler, president of Turner Broadcasting International.

Zeiler was behind a huge restructure of the company’s regional operations in June last year, cutting one in three jobs from its headquarters in Hong Kong as the company looked to decentralise its operations in favour of a more local approach.
