Singapore Press Holdings, Singapore’s largest media company, has appointed a senior civil servant to run its Chinese language operation.

Anthony Tan, who is deputy secretary of policy at the Ministry of Health, is to succeed Lim Jim Koon in the role. Lim is to retire after 38 years with the company.

Tan is to take up the role on 1 February, SPH’s financial broadsheet Business Times is reporting.

Tan, who was formerly special assistant to Singapore’s founding father Lee Kuan Yew, has worked in various posts in government, including at the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Manpower and People’s Association.

SPH’s CEO Alan Chan told Business Times: “Anthony has close to 20 years of experience in the public sector. His varied experience and extensive knowledge put him in good stead to drive the future development of our Chinese Media group and contribute to the company’s success. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Lim Jim Koon for his many years of service and contributions to SPH.”

The appointment comes just over a month after SPH held its annual general meeting at which chairman Lee Boon Yang told shareholders that the company had raised its “appetite” for risk as part of its plan to return to growth.
