Press freedom, from 150th ranking down

The newly released Reporters Without Borders press freedom rankings make for painful reading for most countries in Asia.

Among the fallers was Singapore, which dropped three places to sit just beneath Vladimir Putin’s Russia, in 153rd, the citystate’s lowest ever ranking.

This morning, Dr Mumbo asked Singapore Press Holdings and MediaCorp, Singapore’s two big government-friendly media owners, if they would be publishing a story about the rankings.

Channel NewsAsia has covered the report, posted at 13.53 and updated at 17.50. Singapore’s ranking is mentioned in the last sentence of the story (but not that it has fallen in the index).

The ST went in harder, mentioning Singapore’s fall in the rankings in the opening paragraph, and publishing the whole table. But no comment was given on why Singapore might have fallen in the rankings.

The ST, which is fond of rankings of Singapore, also chose to publish this press release sent out by ad agency McCann last night, which is obviously just as newsworthy:
