We Are Social opens in China

We Are Social has opened for business in China.

The launch expands the social media marketing agency’s Asian footprint to three countries, adding to a presence in Sydney and Singapore.

The agency opens in Shanghai with L’Oreal, Liebherr and GMAC as founding clients, and with back office support from Shenzhen stock exchange-listed BlueFocus Communication Group.

The company launches with 15 staff led by Pete Lin, the former GM and chief marketing strategist of Gravity Group Asia, as MD. His creative partner is Ying Chang, who joins from AKQA where she was associate creative director.

Lin commented: “The social landscape in China is maturing, platforms are becoming more sophisticated and brands are increasingly seeking tangible benefits from their social presence in China.”

“While there are obvious differences between social media in China and the West, We Are Social’s focus on human insight and creativity, not platforms, translates in any market. We’ll bring this approach to the Chinese market, and with it, we’re confident we’ll attract forward-thinking brands and the best talent to service them.”

Lin joins with 17 years’ experience in digital marketing, initially in the US at Grey in San Francisco, where We Are Social recently opened an office. He worked at Grey in China, and at Publicis and JWT.

In Chang’s career, she has worked at the likes of Leo Burnett and DDB. She won a lion at Cannes last year in the mobile category for McDonald’s with “I See Fries.

The agency is actively recruiting for five more roles.
