Singapore takes its happy pill

Singapore isn’t famous for being the cheeriest of cities.

But thankfully, a piece of research has landed in Dr Mumbo’s inbox that blows this idea out of the water with the revelation that 88 per cent of Singaporeans are happy.

As long as they do stuff.

Like go to events.

Then “no more Singa-bore”.

Happy Pill

New survey shows 88% of Singaporeans are happy!

Attending events regularly contributes to the happiness of young Singaporeans

SINGAPORE, Tuesday June 30th – Nearly nine in 10 Singaporeans (88%) aged 30 and under are happy with their current lifestyle, in part due to a vibrant local events scene, an independent survey by global online ticketing platform Peatix has discovered. These results run contrary to previous reports of Singaporeans being unhappy – in fact, less than 1% of the 600 survey participants considered themselves to be very unhappy.

Notably, 63% of happy respondents attended at least one event a month, compared to 49% of unhappy Singaporeans. The top three reasons for attending events were “to learn and experience something new” (74%), “to spend time with friends” (45%) and “to do something different” (43%).

The most attended events in Singapore were in the genres of food and drink (54%), classes and workshops (50%) and concerts and gigs (48%).

“Over the past few years there have been reports of Singaporeans being ‘under-happy’ at work, but based off these results it seems events can provide an avenue for much needed reprieve through meaningful experiences,” said Emi Takemura, Co-founder and Head of Asia at Peatix.

The survey also found Singaporeans view events positively as a platform to spread their own message. In fact, 74% would consider organising an event in the future, and more than half of those who currently organise events are below 30 years old, with their primary motivation being to “share their passion”, whether for a hobby or a cause, amongst a like-minded community.

“Rather than remaining unhappy or being unsatisfied with their quality of life, we find many to be proactive in either participating in or bringing communities together through events,” says Takemura. “Singapore’s events scene is already thriving as it is, and these survey results show an even more promising possibility of what’s to come.”

The Peatix Happiness Survey also revealed:

• 69% of respondents attend events between 1-5 times every quarter.

• 55% would like more classes and workshops available to them, while 46% would like more food and drink events.

• The Esplanade emerged as the top venue for Singaporeans under 30, followed by Suntec Singapore Convention Centre and The Star Theatre at Buona Vista.

• Business events are increasingly popular, with 22% interested in organising professional networking events for their business, while 23% are likely to attend start-up and entrepreneurial events. Additionally, one quarter of respondents hope to see more start-up and entrepreneurial events in Singapore in the future.

The results of the Peatix Happiness Survey have been rounded off to the closest figure.

Peatix conducted the independent survey between April 8-30th 2015, with a total of 600 respondents in Singapore.
