‘No team’ beats Manchester United to most popular football side in Asia: YouGov study

Man U logoThe most popular team among football fans in Asia is no team at all, a study of football audiences has found, suggesting that the region has plenty of untapped potential for soccer brands.

According to pollster YouGov, almost a quarter of 9,600 football fans quizzed in China, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia said they supported no specific team, eight percentage points ahead of second most popular choice, Manchester United.

Man U and ‘No team’ have double the following of next placed Liverpool, followed by Arsenal and Catalan side Barcelona.

In terms of the most popular football league in Asia, domestic competitions are second only to the English Premier League in the size of their following.

The Spanish, German and Italian leagues are some way behind in terms of their popularity, according to the study conducted this month.

Breaking down the data by market, a number of foreign leagues are found to be popular in Hong Kong.

This is in contrast to Australia, where the domestic league is relatively more popular than in other countries.

In Singapore, the EPL is overwhelmingly popular and the country’s domestic league is distinctly unpopular.

The data was presented by Patrick Corr, APAC head of YouGov, at the Sports Matters event in Singapore last week.
