Adman Jeffrey Yu joins PR agency Edelman to lead China operations

Advertising industry veteran Jeffrey Yu has joined PR agency Edelman to lead its China operations as president.

Yu replaces Steven Cao, who was detained by the authorities for questioning in 2014 and remains on administrative leave.

Yu, best known for a long tenure running Bates, now Bates CHI & Partners, in Asia, started his own data/social agency in Shanghai called RMConnect before moving to Edelman as the start of this year. He previously ran Publicis Greater China.

Yu is the second adman to join the PR network in a senior management role inside a year.

Former Leo Burnett Malaysia MD Robert Kay joined Edelman to lead the agency in that country in early 2015.

Edelman has been making hires from the advertising world mainly because of the need for people with experience running larger businesses with larger P&Ls, regional boss Iain Twine explained.

Despite the disruptions to Edelman China’s management tier, the agency grew briskly last year, adding around 100 staff in 2015, according to Twine.

Cao disappeared after a government investigation looking into Edelman’s relationship with state broadcaster CCTV and Rui Chenggang, a former associate, who was detained in a corruption probe last year.
