Bates boss David Mayo handed additional job to differentiate Ogilvy brand as APAC CMO

Screen Shot 2016-02-23 at 12.25.01 pmDavid Mayo has been appointed chief marketing officer of Ogilvy APAC – a newly created role – but will retain his existing duties as CEO of Bates CHI & Partners Asia Pacific.

The popular Brit, who has worked for Ogilvy in various guises for around 20 years, was president of Ogilvy & Mather Advertising ASEAN before taking on the job of reinvigorating the Bates brand in Asia following its merger with British agency CHI.

Mayo confirmed the news, and in a statement shared with Campaign Brief talked about the changing role of the agency and suggested why Ogilvy – one of the region’s most famous brands – needs a chief marketing officer.

Mayo said: “The role of the agency continues to evolve as brands come to terms with the need to be more immediate and responsive to consumer trends. It’s our job to help clients transform and stay relevant.”

“At the same time, I think that with too much non-differentiated choice in the agency world, as an industry we make it harder for clients to find the right agency partner. So I’m looking forward to working with our leadership teams around the region to drive that differentiation, and ensure that O&M maintains its competitive edge in every market,” he said.
