Omnicom’s Andreas Vogiatzakis joins Havas to launch fully-owned Malaysian media offering


Vogiatzakis: ‘The passion of a 25 year-old’

In one of the biggest media people moves of the year in Malaysia, Andreas Vogiatzakis, the long-time country head of Omnicom Media Group, is moving to Havas to expand the group’s operations in that market.

Vogiatzakis takes on the role of CEO of Havas Media Malaysia, and has a brief to introduce the group’s specialist brands such as Mobext, Socialyse, Affiperf and Ecselis, as well as set up the company’s integrated Havas Village proposition together with creative agency Havas Worldwide.

Havas Media has had a low-key presence in Malaysia to date, working through a partnership with local media agency Trapper.

Vogiatzakis’ move coincides with Havas moving away from the arrangement with Trapper that has been in place since 2001, and taking full ownership of its buying capabilities in Malaysia.

He joins a team the genesis of which began earlier this year with the appointment of Christine Chang from PR agency Edelman as GM, and Roopal Julka from Omnicom Media Group’s programmatic arm Accuen as head of digital.

Havas Media’s APAC boss Vishnu Mohan said he was pleased to hire a “well-recognised media heavyweight” to establish the fully-owned Malaysian brand offering.

“Malaysia is a strategically important market for Havas Group in Southeast Asia and is key to our ambition of strengthening our already robust operations in the region. Andreas’ appointment is part of our strategy to put the best talent in the market,” he said.

The news emerges a month after the popular Greek was appointed to lead media agency industry body, the MSA, at a challenging time for the Malaysia media business.

Vogiatzakis said he stepped into the role ahead of an “unprecedented and monumental year of change” as Malaysian media agencies grapple with a sluggish economy, low consumer confidence and intense competition over pricing.

Over Vogiatzakis’ career, he worked for Mindshare in Taiwan and Starcom in Japan before joining OMG about a decade ago.

Mohan commented that what impresses him the most about Vogiatzakis is “his passion, energy and entrepreneurial spirit – which can not only rival a 25 year-old but is also very much in sync with the culture at Havas.”
