Discovery Communications acquires stake in Ivy Wong’s China influencer network VS Media

VS MediaDiscovery Communications has acquired a stake in VS Media, the three year-old Chinese multi-channel network founded by former Yahoo head of sales and COO Ivy Wong.

The deal, for an undisclosed sum, will enable VS Media to tap into content from Discovery’s digital arm, and gives Discovery a broader reach into China through the MCN’s 500 creators, who have more than 54 million subscribers.

The deal comes just one month after Wong landed a deal with CMC Holdings, the investment arm of China Media Capital, and is looking to set up a $4m content development fund to help her network of creators develop local formats.

Discovery APAC boss Arthur Bastings said that VS Media’s following would be “incredibly valuable to us” as the media owner looks to get deeper traction in China.

Wong commented: “Leveraging on Discovery’s expertise, we are driven, more than ever, to propel our growth by empowering creators to come up with more high quality and addictive content.”
