Singapore has region’s unhappiest workforce as media beats marketing for job satisfaction
Singapore has the unhappiest of workforces according to a survey by job seeker site Jobstreet.com of six Southeast Asian countries plus regional rival financial centre Hong Kong.
Singaporeans say that bad leadership is the biggest factor behind their lack of job satisfaction, a sentiment echoed by Malaysians, Thais and Hongkongers, followed by a lack of career development opportunities and training.
Only in the Philippines was a poor salary the cause of the most unhappiness among workers.
What makes workers the most happy, above a good relationship with co-workers, the reputation of the company, corporate values or even salary is the location of the office, the study found. Above all, workers want to work at a place that is convenient to them, it seems.
In a ranking of the happiest professions in Singapore, media ranked seventh, just below admin.
Marketing ranked 16th in a table topped by the sciences.
It seems that the more senior you get in a job in Singapore, the less happy you’ll be.
Fresh graduates with three to five years experiences in the workplace were the happiness of workers, while the c-suite were the most miserable.
Singapore also ranks as the least optimistic of workforces, followed by Hong Kong with faith in job prospects expected to drop by 3% and 5% respectively over the next six months.
Chook Yuh Yng, country manager of Jobstreet.com Singapore commented on the importance of better management to retain staff: “Leaders who place facilitating employee development as a focus will tend to enjoy better employee satisfaction. Learning can be facilitated all the time and not just in the classroom. Dissatisfaction with employee development efforts usually stem from employees feeling that they are not getting much of what they value highly, such as the ability to grow in their jobs.”
I kinda see why media is seen as more “satisfying” than marketing….it’s a pretty lightweight job with not many demands. Does it really take great effort to tell a client where they should spend their budget? All you have to do is look at some relevant data…..boom…done. Next.
Not like theres any deep thinking involved…..its a spreadsheet lovers wet dream.
Reply‘Competency of Management’
You see this a lot…management in singapore is very good at one thing….butting into a campaign….telling people what to do…even though it isn’t very sound….no one dares to speak up….then when it all goes sideways, management blames people for incompetence.
A nice vicious cycle we are all trapped in.
ReplyPeople in Singapore think they are unhappy with their job when really they’re unhappy about living in a dictatorial system which does not allow them to realise their own individual potential and self worth.
ReplyCompanies everywhere only wants to earn money, they don’t care about the welfare of the workers. Always like to cut cost & increase workload. Singapore also imports foreign workers, if you cannot do hardwork then they can hire cheaper & more hardworking workers from other country to replace you.
They will not borther to try to understand why people are leaving thier job & try to improve on the working enviroment or changes that can benefit both the worker & the company. Rather they would assume that its because singaporeans are too lazy to work & too expensive to hire.
This is what the goverment had done to thier citizen, open the flood gates for foreigners to come in & even settle down to replace the original people that are living & staying in this country for years. Those couldn’t get a job will then be forced to do jobs that they are unhappy with just to make a simple living. Will they be happy with thier job?
Singapore wants to become the 1st world country following Switzerland standard of living, but what they care most about is their GDP. The amount of money the country earns is not a reflection of the happiness or the standard of living of the people. In order to become a 1st world country like Switzerland, Singapore needs to truly understands the needs of the citizens & what they can do to improve thier lives to make the country a better nation. Not by replacing people that fail to meet thier 1st world standards.
In a country that only have human as thier only natural resources, people should always be placed before money.
