Netflix selects Weber Shandwick for Singapore and Malaysia PR

NetflixNetflix has appointed Weber Shandwick to handle its public relations in Singapore and Malaysia, according to sources familiar with the review.

The Interpublic-owned firm will take over the account from Publicis Groupe’s MSL, which has handled the business globally since the internet television brand launched in 130 markets in one go at the start of the year.

Weber Shandwick was chosen in a final round of pitching with WE, from an initial field that included Ogilvy PR and the incumbent.

Weber will be working alongside Netflix’s social media agency The Secret Little Agency, and with client Jessica Lee, who joined Netflix from McDonald’s China at the start of the year to lead the company’s communications for the region.

The news emerges as data from IHS reveals that Netflix ramped up its spending in original programming from $2.38 billion to $4.91 billion from 2013 to 2015, outspending the likes of CBS, HBO and Turner.
