NGO for media launches in Myanmar

A club for journalists and PR professionals has opened up in Myanmar.

Myanmar Media Club

The Myanmar Media Club will work to promote the best reporting from around the country, although it was unclear at the time of publishing who was behind the organisation. News of the launch comes a few days after a journalist working for the Myanmar Times was fired after her coverage of rape allegations in the security forces was deemed to have damaged its reputation.

Myanmar Media Club is not the first association to be set up in the Southeast Asia country, with the Foreign Correspondents Club having been set up in recent years after the opening up of the press, while the Myanmar Journalists Network caters for local media.

Myanmar rose one place in the Reporters Without Borders press freedom index, and is now ranked 143rd globally, 18th in the Asia Pacific region.
