The New York Times appoints Damien Cave as Australian Bureau Chief

new-york-timesThe New York Times has announced the appointment of Damien Cave as Australian Bureau Chief alongside Jacqueline Williams and Michelle Innis, who will also join the writing desk.

According to Telum Media, the announcement was made overnight as an internal memo was sent to staff at The New York Times by international editor, Michael Slackman, deputy international editor, Jodi Rudoren, and Asia editor, Phil Pan.

Cave confirmed the news in a tweet posted this morning.

Cave has worked with The New York Times for more than 12 years as its deputy national editor for digital, while Williams has been working with the publication’s investigations team since 2015.

Innis has been an Australian correspondent for The Times for more than three years after an eight-year stint as a sub-editor at The Australian Financial Review. Innis is currently based in Sydney.

Cave is set to lead the Australian office, which will open in Sydney and was announced in December last year, to help build a small team of staff and freelancers.

Cave is set to move in March, although the official opening date has not been confirmed.

Written in the internal memo sent to staff, Cave said: “I just feel really lucky to be able to open a bureau in such a fascinating place.

“I can’t wait to dig in, and I’ve already promised my family that we’ll all learn how to surf.”

The New York Times has posted a list of vacant jobs and position descriptions on its website, including: a graphics/multimedia editor based in Sydney; a reporter based in Sydney or elsewhere in Australia; an audience growth editor based in Sydney; an editorial assistant based in Sydney, and project collaborators based throughout Australia.
