Guardian marks Eid with ‘Malaysian Cinderella’ Facebook film
As Asian pharmacy chain Watsons defends itself after becoming embroiled in a black face row, its rival Guardian Malaysia has taken a less controversial approach to celebrating Hari Raya this year.
In a similar manner to Watsons’ controversial ad, Guardian has also taken inspiration from an old Malay folk tale ‘Bawang Putih dan Bawang Merah’ for its new Facebook campaign.
Dubbed the Malaysian version of popular fairy tale Cinderella, the video shows a kind-hearted woman named Bawang Merah overcoming her evil stepmother and sister to be with her true love. The film adaptation, created by BBDO Malaysia, takes on a more comedic tone.
Released on Facebook earlier this week, the video has received over 1.4 million views.
“We wanted to create something that is deeply rooted in local culture and traditions, but also fresh enough to impress our audience. I’m glad the team made it happen,” said Christina Low, marketing Director of Guardian Malaysia.
“The combination of Wayang Kulit, the folklore, and comedic twists makes this film truly beautiful.”
The music arrangement for the ad was created by Kamrul Hussin and Geng Wak Long, while Zamzuriah Zahari produced the song and choreography.
