24 Hours with… Arcade’s Gary Tranter

24 Hours With… spotlights the working day of some of the most interesting people in Mumbrella Asia’s world. Today, we hear about a day in the life of Gary Tranter, chief creative officer of Arcade

4:30am: I’m normally up ridiculously early. It’s wonderful quiet time to have a cup of tea and get ahead of the day. I have to check the results of an ad I’m anxious about and write a bit more on some scripts that are proving tricky.

5:30am: Run to the gym. I’m a member of three gyms close by, so there’s no excuse. Using different gyms keeps it interesting, fresh and allows you to focus on different, specific goals. Running through the city early morning is beautiful. It affords a glimpse into a different Singapore. This normally clean, hot, bustling city is cool, empty and a little grimy as people stagger home from the bars and before the clean-up crews sweep in.

7am: I try and make it back before my youngest son leaves for school. Today I’m lucky. I taxi home and catch him just in time for him to show me a new trick with his fidget spinner. I want to talk about a poem he wrote, but the fidget spinner is far more important.

7:15am: “When was the last time you ate a salad for breakfast?” The famous line from Born to Run always rattles around in my head when I have breakfast. As a vegetarian it’s normal for me and I know it sounds weird but you should try it – it’s the secret to having energy all day.

8:30am: Head into the office

9am: I need to revise some storyboards and looking at my acount executive contact report she wants to review my ‘scams’ by noon. We’ve yet to enter an award show since starting Arcade, I’m sure she means ‘scamps’.

12:30pm: Client meeting. You don’t want to know.

2:00pm: Client meeting. You don’t want to know.

3:00pm: Client meeting. Awesome meeting. Scripts approved. Rejoice.

4:30pm. Client meeting. You don’t want to know.

5:30pm: Scramble ideas with Matt (Cullen – my longtime creative partner and co-founder of Arcade). He flies to Tokyo for a shoot this evening so we need to crack this brief now.

6:30pm: Matt leaves. We got a bunch of ideas. One decent one.

6:45pm: Head to Song Zu to work on some music. The client says the track is “too choppy” and I can’t wait to tell the lads. They love it when I bring them these challenges. Hopefully Gerard is working with his door closed and I can nick a glass or two of his amazing South Australian Shiraz.

8:00pm: Head to Gem. It’s a bar a few of us from the industry started 10 years ago and it’s come in very handy. Who would’ve thought a bar would be a good accompaniment to the advertising business? Tonight I have to interview an art director. I’m looking forward to it because she had a great book.

9:30pm. Have to pick up my eldest son from his army base. I’ve had a couple of drinks so call my wife and ask her to drive. She’s really thrilled about that.

10:30pm. Home and catch the news before bed. Today was a good day for our little ad agency.
