24 Hours With…Class 95FM’s The Muttons

24 Hours With... spotlights the working day of some of the most interesting people in Asia’s marketing and media landscape. Today, we hear about a day in the life of breakfast time radio hosts The Muttons, AKA Justin Ang and Vernon A

4am: We start our day out of bed at about 4am (snooze till 4.20am), then straight to a quick cold shower, which really helps in the waking up process. Justin is usually in charge of breakfast, and every Friday is McDonald’s Friday for us.

So a quick stop at the drive-thru to grab some coffee and Mcmuffins. As for Vernon, a bit of procrastination and not enough coffee means he’s a little late. But driving slightly over the speed limit ensures that he still gets in the studio on time.

7am: Our radio show Muttons In The Morning kicks into high gear. The Class 95 morning show is always packed with tons of local content, commercial elements, and all the big station promos are anchored on the morning drive time. This means very little time to eat, drink or take a pee break. There is no greater daily adrenaline rush. And we have too much fun every morning that it never feels like a real job.

9am: We gave away a trip to New York this morning in our stations’ biggest promo of the year – Spin & Win: International Foodie Edition. And as a tie in, we brought Instagram star Melissa Patrice in for a special interview. She curates the @girleatworld account, which has garnered her almost 400,000 followers. Specialising in food and travel shots, she shared tips on how to take spectacular photos, using just an iPhone.

12pm: We usually take two hours to pre-produce for the next day’s show and do any voiceover work for television. For lunch today, we had the privilege of being invited to Resorts World Sentosa’s Food Festival. RWS put up more than 60 stalls selling samples of dishes from their famous restaurants. We ate ourselves silly with beef ribs, scallops, chicken sandwiches and so much more, and that’s before visiting the dessert hall. They should do this festival more often.

2pm: We meet up with the rest of the Class 95 team at Bukit Batok bus depot, to take a group photo with our new bus advert. Our hardworking marketing team had designed a new bus ad to flood the roads with our faces. This is also to kick off a Facebook contest where anyone who takes a picture with our bus and tags us will stand to win sold-out tickets to the upcoming Backstreet Boys concert.

2pm

6pm: A quick drive home for a shower and short nap, and we’re off to separate events this evening. Justin follows Class 95 DJ Yasminne Cheng head to Suntec City for ‘Freebie Friday’, a weekly event where we give away free food, drinks or snacks at a popular location. Today, we gave away 150 Krispy Kreme donuts in just 15 minutes. Actually, we probably give away 147 doughnuts because Justin ate three of them before it even started.

8pm: Vernon is at Lau Pa Sat this evening, for an Erdinger Beer Oktoberfest event. He’ll be filing ‘roving reports’ back to the studio, and also taking fans on a Facebook Live tour of the event. How many beers did Vernon have by 10pm? Well, everyone lost count.

10pm: We don’t always have such long days, but they happen often enough. Time for bed, and the thought of being able to wake up at 10am tomorrow morning is the sweetest feeling at the end of a hectic week.
