Dr Mumbo

Want to attend a workshop by ex-Marketing Group boss Callum Laing? That will be $5k

The co-founder of the, shall we say, colourful holding company The Marketing Group, Callum Laing, has been somewhat quiet since stepping down from the board.

However one year on, and with the beleaguered TMG seemingly behind him, Laing has clearly moved onto other ventures as evidenced by this email that somehow found its way to Dr Mumbo’s inbox.

With the subject line of ‘I’m loving angels instead…’ Dr Mumbo couldn’t help but be intrigued. Turns out, unlike Robbie Williams, Laing isn’t loving real angels. It’s ‘angel investors’ he really wants.

The email reads:

“I am generally a little sceptical of the the sudden rise in everyone calling themselves ‘Angel Investors’ however I am a massive fan of anything that drives investment and liquidity into the small business world.

“To that end I have been working with the World Business Angel Forum (WBAF) to see how we can help facilitate more cross border collaboration between investors and good companies looking for investment.

“Expect to hear some pretty cool announcements on that coming soon!”

“On the topic of investing, we have a couple of very nice IPO’s coming up before the end of the year. If you are a ‘sophisticated investor’ and would like to get your hands on some pre-IPO stock then hit reply right now and write “I am soooo sophisticated!”. I will send you some more info.”

“And whether you are an Investor or an Entrepreneur, in about a months time I will be running a 2 day programme here in Singapore on the Agglomeration Model and whether it’s right for your business.  You can find out more here or via this video.

“Ticket is S$5,000 but the first 5 people on this list who reply can get a ticket for $1,000 each. Don’t miss it, will be a good couple of days.”

Anyone familiar with the saga of TMG will remember well how following a period of  seemingly “meteoric” growth, the business’s share price later plummeted to a measly €0.40c, where roughly it remains today. So much for the success of the “agglomeration model”.

In light of that, Dr Mumbo was somewhat surprised to see Laing offering up his expertise so enthusiastically and expecting folks to pay S$5,000 for it.

A fool and his money are soon parted, so the saying goes.
