Y&R’s Sanjay Bhasin heads to Dentsu Aegis to take on IndoChina leadership

A 24-year veteran of creative agency Y&R has departed to Dentsu Aegis Network just two months after the exit of regional chief executive Matt Godfrey.

Sanjay Bhasin has been appointed as the chief executive officer of Dentsu Aegis Network IndoChina in a newly-created role, after stepping down as Y&R South East Asia and Thailand CEO.

The ad land veteran first started his career at Y&R New York in 1993 and first moved to Asia in 1999, to oversee the Indonesia, Vietnam and Philippines offices.

He will take over from Toshinori Aoki, the CEO of Dentsu Aegis Network Vietnam, who will move back to Tokyo to take on an unspecified after seven years in Vietnam. Bhasin will officially ascend the new role in January.

Under Bhasin’s remit will be the markets of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar. He will report to Dick van Motman, CEO of Dentsu Aegis Network South East Asia, who previously oversaw Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.

Bhasin said: “The collaborative spirit, strength and suite of capabilities drew me to the network. Its ability to provide truly convergent solutions at scale and speed is truly exciting. I am looking forward to working with the great talent at Dentsu Aegis Network and expanding upon the vast opportunities that the IndoChina region holds.”

Van Motman added: “Aoki has built a strong foundation in Vietnam and with his move back to Japan we are looking to bring in fresh talent to further evolve the business and tap into the growth that is now occurring across the IndoChina region.

“Sanjay brings a great breadth of experience, a client centric/solution-based approach and a deep appreciation for what creates consumer engagement in this day and age. Next to this having worked across cultures, both regionally and globally, he is a true embodiment of the power of diversity and convergence.”

Bhasin’s is the second high-profile departure to hit Y&R in recent months, after Godfrey stepped down from leadership to become CEO of Singapore-based food start-up Nutrition Innovation.

Godfrey’s departure followed that of Y&R Singapore managing director Melvin Kuek, who was replaced by former ZOO boss Shirley Tay in April. The network’s operation in  The Philippines also recently lost its short-lived CEO Randy Aquino, who was replaced by Cheil’s Onat Roldan after less than a year.
