Diverse set of Mumbrella Asia Awards winners revealed – mirroring the changing industry landscape
The best media and marketing talent from across the Asia-Pacific region was recognised at the Mumbrella Asia Awards ceremony last night in Singapore.
Hundreds of people attended the ceremony at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, with work and companies across a wide spectrum of nationalities and disciplines being championed.
PHD China took home the most gongs including the coveted APAC Media Agency of the Year award.
The agency won four awards for ‘The Sex Ed Revolution’, an innovative campaign to help educate young Chinese adults on the merits of contraception. The work scooped the categories Engaging with Millennials, the Mumbrella Award for Bravery, Media Idea of the Year and Social Idea of the Year.
The jury praised the work and the client, the contraceptive brand Yasmin, for being bold. The firm had actually risked losing its trading licence in the tightly-regulated Chinese market because talking about sex is a societal taboo and advertising contraceptives is actually illegal in China.
Meanwhile, Singapore’s self-appointed ‘fourth telco’ Circles.Life and independent agency Supermarket Creatives scooped the top honour for Campaign of the Year – for the brand’s ’20/20 Launch’. They also triumphed in the Creative Effectiveness category. The jurors called the campaign’s use of vandalism in Singapore “ballsy” and “courageous”, praising its “daring idea and an impeccable execution”.
This year’s awards marked the first time the Mumbrella Asia Awards held live judging, here in Singapore, in order to make the vetting process even more robust. It meant those shortlisted presented to the jurors in person – also answering rigorous questions from them – for the second round of judging. And the jury for the awards was the largest ever with 121 judges.
Said jurors also awarded The Monkeys with the title of APAC Creative Agency of the Year – for the second time running. And Weber Shandwick was named APAC Public Relations Agency Network of the Year, while Australian agency Eleven won the regional award for Public Relations Agency of the Year.
There was more success too for Omnicom Media Group during the evening, with PHD China’s sister agency OMD Singapore receiving the Mumbrella Award for Insight and OMD Thailand grabbing the prize for Best Use of Programmatic.
Havas India claimed the top prize for Best Use of Experiential, a new award and this year’s most hotly-contested category – for the work ‘Mortein – Kill the Real Demons’ for Reckitt Benckiser. The jury described the Havas entry as “truly inspiring” and a “smart and beautiful” piece of work.
This year’s awards also saw the emergence of a number of new players in the space representing the rapidly changing industry landscape, including the start-up Postr (Singapore). It was named Disruptor of the Year for the introduction of mobile lockscreen ads that rewarded users with free data.
Another great entry was Dentsu Aegis Network’s Isobar and Carat, who scooped the Mumbrella Award for Innovation and Most Engaging 360 Video/Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality Work – for General Motors Korea’s ‘Chevrolet V-Showroom ‘.
Finally, Singapore-based newcomer Wootag, which specialises in making videos interactive through clickable links and calls-to-action, won Marketing Technology Company of the Year.
Individual awards were also handed out to Strategic Public Relations Group’s founder and chairman Richard Tsang, who was crowned Agency Leader of the Year, while Sinclair Hong Kong account manager Holly Chan was named Under 30 Achiever of the Year.
