Nicolas Winding Refn teams up with W+K and Nike China for ‘Shanghai Fast’

Director Nicolas Winding Refn has utilised his signature use of neon to bring Nike China’s new film for Shanghai Marathon to life.

Created by Wieden + Kennedy,  ‘Shanghai Fast’ celebrates the speed of the city and the incredible athletes who run it.

The 90-second film features a female runner at the end of a mundane run who is suddenly taunted by a series of mysterious city locals who challenge her to keep up with their speed.

“What unfolds in this simple idea is an evolution to an adrenaline-fuelled chase sequence; capturing not only the physical mechanics and intrigue of a classic film chase through the streets, alleyways, and rooftops of the city, but also the unmistakable beauty and spirit of old and new Shanghai,” said Erwin Federizo, creative director at W+K Shanghai. “This film is just as much a love letter to the city of Shanghai as it is a motivating Nike ad.”

Best known for films such as Drive and Only God Forgives, Refn’s direction takes the action from Shanghai’s traditional lane houses to its highest skyscrapers.

The campaign also includes interactive neon installations along popular running routes, social content and in-store videos and graphics. The artwork used for print executions was photographed by Pari Dukovic.

Shanghai Marathon takes places on 12 November.
