Nice to meat you: That programmatic ad placement for Redmart

Dr Mumbo has never had much of an appetite for fake news stories, especially those articles pertaining to a spot of cannibalistic fine dining.

But as these stories seem to be part and parcel of covering the media and marketing industry today, Dr M felt obligated to investigate a mysterious tale headlined: “First ever human meat restaurant has opened in Tokyo (Japan).”

Macedonian or Russian clickfarm anyone?

At this point, Dr Mumbo is quite uncertain which is more stomach-churning: the grisly image to the left or the fact that more than 20,000 people have shared this story.

Spare a thought for dear old Singaporean e-grocer Redmart though, as further inspection revealed this unfortunate programmatic ad placement. Dr M is sure it is down to bad programmatic though from an external company rather than Redmart itself. Did someone shout ‘brand safety’ at the back?

In fact, Dr Mumbo couldn’t believe his eyes when reading the ad text: “Skip the queues and curious hands.”

And yet while Dr M is quite able to tell fact from fiction, he may nevertheless have to take a second look next time he’s shopping for some sirloin steak. Actually, he has lost his appetite all of a sudden.
