Dr Mumbo

Jack Ma the movie star? Or another David Brent tribute?

As readers will remember, Dr Mumbo is a big fan of David Brent, the ‘chilled-out entertainer’ boss from British sitcom The Office.

If Dr Mumbo was a boss, he would aspire to be as cool, calm and downright hilarious as the Noughties sitcom legend. Unfortunately though, Alibaba’s Jack Ma already seems to have filled those shoes in Asia.

Given his net worth of US$41.8 billion, it is perhaps understandable why Ma wants to give a little back to his employees and the world by putting himself on the silver screen in the form of his own kung fu film.

Not at all an ego trip in the slightest.

According to the plot summary, the raucous adventure sees Jack Ma stumble across a street called “Mount Hua Sect” hiding between flowers and trees. As you do.

He enters and is soon confronted with multiple martial arts masters from around the world, where each martial arts discipline is tested. “It is not until the end of Jack’s journey that the truth of his experience is revealed,” the summary concludes. It’s a thrilling affair as you can imagine.

Dr Mumbo concedes that Ma’s acting chops, martial arts moves and his apparent control over the elements are rather impressive.

However, while obviously made on a significantly lower budget, Dr Mumbo still thinks David Brent’s ‘Life on the Road’ still remains the pinnacle of visionary leadership. Take note Jack Ma: you may have US$41.8 billion, but you can’t outmatch Brent for talent.
