JWT Bangkok replaces departed Bob Hekkelman with McCann’s Maureen Tan
J Walter Thompson Asia Pacific has named Maureen Tan as the new chief executive officer of Bangkok following the departure of the long-serving Bob Hekkelman.
Tan was most recently the general manager of South East Asia for Commonwealth/ McCann and has been based in Bangkok for the past 10 years.
She started her advertising career at Leo Burnett Malaysia and has held held managing director roles at Atlas Communications and OgilvyOne Thailand, as well as senior roles at Geometry Global and OgilvyAction.
Jacco ter Schegget, the agency’s South East Asia CEO, said: “Maureen is the ideal modern-day integrated leader to drive Thailand’s combined offering forward.
“One of our biggest offices in Southeast Asia, J. Walter Thompson Bangkok boasts strong specialisms across the marcoms spectrum, and Maureen’s excellent track record across all the key disciplines – digital, CRM, shopper, activation and brand-building – make her the perfect choice to drive deeper collaboration between the five business units.”
Tan’s appointment follows the departure of the highly-regarded Hekkelman, who exited the agency after 16 years in November. He also held the role JWT South East Asia CEO.
On joining the agency, Tan said: “These are exciting times at J. Walter Thompson, as business transformation is being effected across the region. To be taking charge of the already thriving Bangkok office is a great honour, and I look greatly forward working with Jacco and the rest of the SEA leadership implementing his transformation process.”
Given the recent rumours ( & confirmation) to Adnews Australia that a possible global Grey-JWT merger is on the cards, you’d wonder why anyone would seek a position in either agency.

ReplyShe’s a bloody strong leader, with a good sense of what’s needed to keep the agency on track. Not sure about Jacoo being up to her high standards though. As for Johnny Guts, less said the better. [Edited under Mumbrella’s community standards]
ReplyWell done, Maureen. A good time to shine bright, with all the other JWT Asean CEOs in the worst shape, ever. Do what you can for Bangkok until Tamara gives you a leg up the rungs.
ReplyDon’t think J can afford to hire CEOs across ASEAN because they don’t make as much money (via organic or even new biz) as sexier WPP shops like Ogilvy.
Sg hasn’t a CEO, just some MD.
