That overcooked #CrispyRendang joke, come join the fun

It’s almost Friday lunchtime and Dr Mumbo is hungry for a good culinary crisis to round off the Easter week.

Luckily, thanks to a Masterchef row over whether the South East Asian dish Rendang should be cooked crispy or not, Dr Mumbo has more than enough food for thought.

And given the trend for local brands to jump on international (non?) stories for their own hits and giggles, Dr M has had his fill of newsfeed reactions to the #CrispyRendang crisis.

First up is the Republic of Singapore Airforce, which appears to be making the most of this pleasant time of peace by posting images like this on Facebook:

Not to be outdone by their military counterparts, the Singapore Civil Defence Force also decided to turn up the heat to its Facebook page fans.


Meanwhile in Malaysia, KFC proved its marketing team was just as fast as its food by being among the first to jump on the ‘newsjacking’ bandwagon. In a Facebook and Instagram post showing bucket of fried chicken, set against a backdrop of flames, two words hit the message home: “Not Rendang.”

“The only thing that should be crispy is our fried chicken,” it quipped.

Which of course spawned its own copycat variations, like this from Malaysian coffee house Pan & Temper:

And just when Dr Mumbo was beginning to feel the Masterchef pile-on was becoming somewhat overcooked, lo and behold the brand king of newsjacking – Ikea – had to jump onboard the bandwagon:

Crispy Rendang or not? A joke surely burnt to a crisp now.
