GroupM shakes-up leadership team in Malaysia to become ‘more digital, mobile and data focused’

GroupM Malaysia chief operating officer Chanchal Chakrabarty has been named as the agency’s new CEO as part of a management reshuffle.

Chakrabarty: ‘We’ve done the hard work’

He will take over from interim CEO Jon Thurlow from August 1 and report into Thurlow who takes the role of GroupM Malaysia chairman.

The appointment is one of a series of senior management changes which the agency described as the culmination of a “structural transformation….designed to expand services for advertisers seeking growth in Malaysia”.

GroupM Asia Pacific chief executive Mark Patterson said the agency will become “more digital, more mobile and more data-focused”.

Chakrabarty said in a statement that the “hard work” has been done to ensure GroupM Malaysia has the “right structure and the best access to media partners, data and technology”.

“I’m excited to lead GroupM Malaysia’s next chapter,” he said. “I’m confident the talented leaders we’ve assembled will ensure we continuously exceed our clients’ expectations while forging even stronger relationships with media partners. Together, we’ll drive our clients’ growth and take GroupM Malaysia to new heights.”

Other changes see Mindshare MD Cindy Chia appointed head of client services for GroupM. She will lead client engagement for the group and “mentor the next generation of GroupM’s leaders”.

Dheeraj Raina will return to Mindshare in October

Succeeding Chia at Mindshare from October 1 will be ADA Malaysia boss Dheeraj Raina. It marks a return to GroupM for Raina who previously worked with Mindshare Malaysia as general manager and head of strategy and product.

Elsewhere, Xaxis director Asha Nair is promoted to MD while Wing Tak Yee re-joins the group on August 15 to lead the [m]Platform division. Yee was previously Maxus head of digital and returns to GroupM from Star Media Group.

Meanwhile, Saurabh Chandrashekhar and Wan Lih Chan are jointly promoted within MediaCom. Chandrashekhar becomes general manager, product and new business while Chan becomes  general manager, client and talent.
