Dr Mumbo

Sir John Hegarty, a McLaren supercar and La Croisette in Cannes – just an average day for a CNBC journo

Times have changed since the now male, pale and stale Dr Mumbo became a cub reporter all those years ago.

Gone are the long liquid lunches at the pub and the delightful dinners at fine-dining establishments his contacts used to be able to treat him to on their expense accounts.

These days, the pinched media landscape is all about zero-based budgeting and international travel bans – according to those bending Dr M’s ear on a regular basis. Austerity bites. But not for all, it seems.

For some, the road of excess still leads to the palace of wisdom (extra points for those who got the William Blake literary reference).

Just check out CNBC anchor Karen Tso doing her interview with Sir John Hegarty, while driving around the vicinity of La Croisette at the recent Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, in a McLaren no less.

Supercar. Tick. Ad land legend. Tick. Champagne-swilling industry jamboree. Tick.

Just for the record, Dr M is not jealous Karen. His kopitiam and Hainanese chicken rice at the hawker centre, just near the office in Singapore, will do just fine thank you very much.
