Dr Mumbo

Calling all F&B companies – marketing guru Gary Vaynerchuk wants to barter with you

Dr Mumbo was about to head off for a lost weekend at the nearest pub when he his inbox pinged with some ‘breaking news’.

Just what was it that so intrigued Dr M? Well, fresh after announcing that he would tell Martin Sorrell he wasn’t selling if S4 Capital came knocking on VaynerMedia’s door, Gary Vee has announced his latest business brainwave.

He is offering food and beverage start-ups the chance to do barter deals with him. The reason? Well, according to Vaynerchuk he “spends a lot of money on snacks and beverages across our four, soon to be five, global offices”.

He continues: “The truth is that I know I can offer some snack and beverage suppliers/companies out there significant value in comparison to the cost of the goods that I’m looking for. The details are below, feel free to fill out the form.

“P.S, when you fill out this form, bare in mind that if you’re asking for $100K in services from me, I’m going to expect $100K in coffee, chips, or goods in general in return.”

Mr Vee is coming for your drinks and snacks

So just what is the quid pro quo? Dr M hears you ask. Don’t fret, here’s the price list for the services he is willing to provide in food-for-media contra deals:

  • VaynerMentors: $150,000 min – $300,000 max
  • Time with Gary: $50,000 min – $500,000 max
  • Studio Time at VaynerProductions – $1,500 min

But beware of the caveat. “Please keep in mind that I’m not looking to trade agency services outside of the ones listed above in exchange for the snacks/beverages being supplied,” explains Gary.

“Additionally, I’m not looking to establish a partnership if you’re not offering to exchange at least $50,000 worth of snacks/beverages.”

In case the offer seems to be lacking context, he writes: “One of the things that I’m fascinated by that has emerged in my world within the last three to five years is the barter economy.

“Frankly, I genuinely believe that over the next decade or two, as information and technology advance, one of the next eBays, Airbnbs, Ubers and overall two-way marketplaces will be a bartering system.

“We’re just going to trade, trade, trade. I think the exchange of goods and services within the context of people owning stuff that is of less value to them, but of considerable value to others, and vice versa, is an incredible trade.

“As many of you probably know, I actually come from a trading background; baseball cards, comic books, wine, and garage sale flipping, so I love it.

“One of the things that has emerged over the past two years is from running VaynerMedia is that I’ve been able to start flirting with the bartering industry.”

Dr M will flirt right back at you Mr Vee. He is going to start brewing Mumbo beer now. Gary, you shall hear more once he has crafted $50,000 worth of the finest ale.

Obviously Sorrell will need to change his strategy, if he wants in too. It’s a strange world in media and marketing at the moment, but it keeps getting stranger by the day.
