Dr Mumbo

Want to rub my belly? That’s $10 a month: The furry world of SgInstaPussies cat influencers

First we had the grubby SgInstaBabes controversy. Now we have SgInstaPussies. Where does it end, Dr Mumbo asks?

Rest easy. All is not as it seems.

Dr Mumbo doffs his cap to the independent Singaporean agency Goodstuph for a wonderful parody of what can only be described as the cash-for-girls racket of SgInstaBabes. Real-time marketing at its best, Dr M thinks.

And this time it’s cash-for-cats.

For those unfamiliar with recent events, SgInstaBabes – sitting under the increasingly catch-all moniker of ‘influencers’ – turned to membership platform Patreon to launch a sliding scale of tiered membership in a heartfelt attempt to raise cash.

To summarise, the deeper your pockets the more exposure, as it were, you got to a collection of girls who, how shall we say, appear “fun loving”.

The funds, they pleaded, would enable them to produce even more engaging content than they already offered.

Basic membership of $7.50 a month secured access to the SgInstBabes back catalogue, while $5,000 got you an invite to an exclusive yacht party.

You get the picture, and it was probably best covered by local title Mothership.

Which brings us to SgInstaPussies.

It too launched tiered membership. And it’s equally unsettling.

You want to rub their furry bellies? Fine, but it’ll set you back $10 a month. Dr Mumbo will let the images paint the sordid picture.

Want to get more friendly?

Taking a leaf out the SgInstaBabes book, GoodStuph’s cats also spoke of the good they will do once the cash rolls in.

The work is a campaign for the Cat Welfare Society, which – genuinely – needs $60,000 a month to run at full capacity.

So, what do you get for shelling out $50 a month and becoming a cat’s “best friend”.

That’s cats for you.
