‘The whopper lives in a bun mansion, just like you’: Welcome to the bizarre world of robot ads

“The chicken crossed the road to become a sandwich, Burger King encouraged the chicken”.

“The whopper lives in a bun mansion, just like you”.

“On a bed of lettuce for you to sleep on”.

Nonsensical, you might think. Dr Mumbo wouldn’t disagree. And there’s plenty more where these lines came from.

Such absurdities are contained in four wonderfully quirky Burger King ads that are strewn with weird and wonderful phrases.

“Tastes like bird,” another ad says. “The chicken sandwich from Burglar King”.

The reason? According to the fast food firm, the ads were created entirely by artificial intelligence. If that is true, Dr Mumbo suggests we should all stop worrying about losing our jobs to our robotic rivals.

However, Dr Mumbo, smells a rat. That’s not a slur on the general quality of fast food, but a suspicion – shared by a few others – that all is not quite as it seems.

If it was created by AI, then we have all under-estimated the comedy value of robots.

Burger King said in a press release that it effectively trained an “artificial neural network” with “advanced pattern recognition capabilities”.

The “scripts”, we are told, emerged after it analysed “thousands of fast-food commercials and competitive reports from industry research,” Burger King said, with all four ads starting by telling viewers “this ad was created by artificial intelligence”.

Regardless, AI or just a clever marketing campaign, Dr Mumbo doffs his cap.

He’s now off to his bun mansion for a lie down on his crispy lettuce bed.
