The year in review: Our top Dr Mumbos of 2018

Looking back across the last 12 months usually highlights both the sublime and the ridiculous – luckily, Dr Mumbo was there to capture it all once again so here are the favourite Dr M moments of 2018

1. What to do about sacked advertising grandee Tham Khai Meng? Write a celebratory listicle of course

Dr Mumbo was thrilled to see The Straits Times buck the trend and run a celebration of the life and times of ex-Ogilvy global creative chief Tham Khai Meng, shortly after he was fired for ‘misconduct’ from the agency.

2. Jack Ma the movie star? Or another David Brent tribute?

Another year and yet another attempt by Alibaba’s Jack Ma to give one of Dr Mumbo’s personal heroes, David Brent of The Office (the British version), a run for his money.

3. When a Lexus launch is a Blair Witch spoof

Facebook Live transformed a staid launch event into something a lot more surreal and strange. Like a lot of iconic cinema, this only survives in a much-censored version with many of the highlights missing, but Dr Mumbo still has an eyewitness report to give his readers some idea of what they missed.

4. Dettol Singapore’s Hannibal Lecter moment

Early this year, Dettol told us “Nothing beats the refreshing scent of a freshly cleaned child”. Dr Mumbo still shudders at the memory.

5. When is a free luxury trip not what it seems? When it’s a brand’s April Fool’s Day prank

The merry pranksters of Zuji Singapore pulled one over on Dr Mumbo last April. Dr M spent the rest of the year rejecting generous offers of all sorts: from Nigerian princes to press junkets, and everything in between.

6. Want to rub my belly? That’s $10 a month: The furry world of SgInstaPussies cat influencers

Riffing on the slightly dubious SGInstababes, SGInstaPussies just sounded like a better deal overall to Dr Mumbo.

7. Don’t panic endangered animals, air fresheners are here to save you – says Dentsu Webchutney

Here is why Dr Mumbo is just going to stock up on air fresheners this year, instead of forking out cash to Greenpeace and the WWF. 

8. The agency of the future: WPPublicisCom&IPGDentsuCorpCo

Dr Mumbo chuckled to himself at a tweet from R/GA that promised WPPublicisCo&IPGDentsuCorpCo in 2078. Subsequent events have convinced him it could happen a lot sooner.

9. Where did you hear about us? Print, TV, website, word of mouth or armpit?

After years of being airbrushed out of existence, Dr Mumbo was pleased to see armpits return with a vengeance. And yet, he had mixed feelings about them being used as an ad medium.

10. Salesforce and Metallica: The day hardcore thrash metal and cloud marketing came together

Metallica declared salesforce’s cloud solutions to be “way cool”. Which isn’t a term Dr Mumbo has heard being used to describe Metallica ever since the Napster fracas.
