The ads that aired during the 2019 Super Bowl

With the Super Bowl in its the 53rd year, Mumbrella wraps up the ads that screened during the Super Bowl with Yellow Tail, Doritos, Bumble, Pringles and Pizza Hut all making their mark

Bud Light and Game of Thrones


In a Game of Thrones inspired commercial, Bud Light has advertised its beer and the final season of The Game Thrones for its Super Bowl ad this year. The ad was directed by Westworld co-creator Jonathan Nolan.

Audi


Car manufacturer Audi has engaged Venables Bell & Partners to create a 60 second ad which features a man receiving a new Audi from his grandfather. As the ad unfolds it is revealed the man is actually choking on a cashew and in a dream-like state when he imagines he is getting the new car.

Google


Titled ‘100 Billion Words’, Google’s Super Bowl spot endeavoured to show its audience the purpose of its communication “to unite and share”. The ad features all different people from different cultures translating words about food, friendship, sport, fear and belief so they can communicate with each other despite speaking different languages.

The ad also reveals the most translated words “how are you?”, “thank you” and “I love you”. The ad was created by Google’s in-house team at Google Creative Labs.

The Washington Post


Airing its first ever Super Bowl ad, The Washington Post highlights the important work journalists do.

Narrated by Tom Hanks, the ad also pays its respect to those who have lost their lives while chasing critical stories. The ad has been produced in partnership with Mark Woollen and Associates.

Amazon

Tech-giant Amazon has recruited Broad City’s Abbi and Alana to feature in its comical ad which shares the reasons why you can’t put Alexa into everything. The ad shows the company’s fails when they try to insert Alexa into a dog collar, toothbrush and spa.

Toyota


Toyota has told its customers why it has never been a big fan of assumptions and used female NFL player Antoinette “Toni” Harris to illustrate why.

The ad features the story of how Tony defied stereotypes and perceptions and managed to become a college female football star despite everyone’s disbelief.

Burrell Communications is at the helm of the commercial.

Turkish Airlines

Originally made as a six minute spot, Turkish Airlines created an ad directed by Sir Ridley Scott and starring Sylvia Hoeks. Created as if it were a movie trailer, the ad features Scott as she mysteriously follows a woman trying to get photos of her.

Microsoft


Microsoft focuses on its new Xbox Adaptive Controller and the way it can help everyone play video games. The spot features a number of children with disabilities as they talk about how playing video games makes them feel connected.

‘When everybody plays, we all win’, the tagline for the ad says. Blk-Ops created the ad.

Mercedes-Benz


Mercedes-Benz’s 2019 Super Bowl ad features a man commanding a golfer to “make the putt”, the traffic lights to change and a police woman to tear up a ticket.

The ad, created by Merkley+Partners, aims to promote the ways in which Mercedes-Benz’s new A-Class model listens to your every command.

Ludacris also makes a brief appearance in the spot.

Hyundai


Actor Jason Bateman is the star of Hyundai’s Super Bowl campaign ‘The Elevator’. The campaign features Bateman taking people to different appointments and destinations, with car shopping at the very bottom of the list and below the dentist, jury duty, the middle seat on a plane and a vegan dinner party.

The ad was created by Hyundai’s creative agency of record Innocean.

Expensify

Expense management platform Expensify has made its 2019 Super Bowl ad into a rap by 2 Chainz and actor Adam Scott. Created by JohnXHannes New York, the ad depicts Scott as a finance director as he asks 2 Chainz for his expenses.

2 Chainz then proceeds to tell Scott he doesn’t need to keep his receipts because he uses Expensify.

Sketchers

American football superstar Tony Romo features in Sketchers 2019 Super Bowl commercial. The ad aims to promote how “easy” Sketchers’ new slip on shoe is.

Stella

Stella Artois has recruited Sarah Jessica Parker as her famous Sex in the City character Carrie Bradshaw and Jeff Bridges as ‘The Dude’ from The Big Lebowski movie for its Super Bowl ad. The spot, titled ‘Change Up The Usual’ shows Carrie Bradshaw ordering a Stella Artois instead of her signature cosmopolitan cocktail.

The ad, created by Mother New York, is backed to the Sex and the City theme song.

Olay

Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar, who has previously starred in horror movies such as I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2, features in Olay’s #KillerSkin Super Bowl commercial. The horror ad, which is teased as if it were a movie trailer, has been created by Saatchi & Saatchi.

This is Olay’s first time advertising during the Super Bowl.

Michelob Ultra

American actress, singer, and model Zoë Kravitz is the centre of Michelob Ultra’s 2019 Super Bowl ad. The campaign uses sound as the hero of the ad, with the aim of promoting the beer in its “organic form”.

The ad, which uses sound to evoke autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR), has been created by FCB Chicago.

Devour

In a short film commercial, Devour has told the story of a young couple whose relationship is falling apart due to frozen food porn. Kraft-Heinz’s frozen food brand is set to run during this year’s Super Bowl.

Yellowtail

Australian wine brand Yellow Tail has released its third consecutive Super Bowl ad with the theme ‘tastes like happy’ featuring wine drinkers at happy moments.

The ad on the day will include two winners from 1,500 entries into Yellow Tail’s ‘tastes like happy’ campaign, which invited U.S. consumers to share a six-second video on social media about what ‘tastes like happy’.

Anna Czarnocka, global marketing manager for Yellow Tail, said: “The U.S. is the largest market for [Yellow Tail] and we are the #1 imported wine brand^.

“The Super Bowl provides us with a platform to reach an engaged audience of over 100 million people in an impactful and memorable way. Traditionally most consumers drank beer while watching the Super Bowl, however tastes are changing, and more and more consumers are now enjoying wine while watching the Super Bowl.”

Pepsi

Rapper Lil Jon pours a large cup of Pepsi in PepsiCo’s 2019 Super Bowl trailer. The ad concludes with the rapper saying his signature line: “okay”. Goodby, Silverstein & Partners are handling the brand’s creative for the Super Bowl.

Pepsi has also released another trailer which features celebrities including Steve Carell and rapper Cardi B. The second spot shows Carell explaining why the beverage is more than just “okay”.

Budweiser

Backed to Bob Dylan classic ‘Blowin in the Wind’, Budweiser aims to celebrate its environmental credentials and promote its use of wind power in its 2019 Super Bowl campaign. The ad has been created by DAVID.

Avocados from Mexico

Returning to the Super Bowl this year is Avocados from Mexico, this time recruiting actress Kristin Chenoweth as she attempts to train three dogs to sing “Avocados from Mexico” in harmony. The ad is created by Energy BBDO.

Doritos

The Backstreet Boys and Chance the Rapper have fronted Doritos’ Super Bowl ad trailer, with the brand teasing its ‘Flamin’ Hot Nacho’ Doritos. Goodby, Silverstein and Partners is the brand’s creative agency of record.

The full ad was later unveiled as a remix of The Backstreet Boys’ ‘I Want it That Way’ which featured a rap by Chance the Rapper. The ad was set out as a music video to promote Doritos’ Flamin’ Hot Nacho chips.

Kia

Car manufacturer Kia has taken a different approach with its Super Bowl ad, pointing out the millions of dollars being spent on celebrity endorsements for big Super Bowl ads. Kia challenges companies to spend those millions on helping “un-famous” people. David and Goliath has created the spot for Kia.

M&M’s

Actress Christina Applegate is the at the centre of M&M’s Super Bowl teaser ad. Applegate is shown trying to get into her car, with an unseen entity constantly locking and unlocking the door. BBDO was responsible for last year’s Danny Devito campaign.

The ad was later revealed to be promoting M&M’s new chocolate bar.

Verizon

Multinational telecommunications company Verizon has released a spot for the 53rd Super Bowl with the teaser commercial featureing 12 NFL stars who have been saved by first responders. The campaign, titled ‘The Team That Wouldn’t Be Here’, was created by McCann and aims to show Americans why Verizon is important and how it helps connect those in need to first responders.

Bumble

Tennis star Serena Williams leads dating app, Bumble’s, Super Bowl TV commercial as she tells viewers women are “just as strong, just as smart, just as savvy” as men. The ad is being created by FlyteVu, and WPP’s VMLY&R.

Bubly

Canadian singer Michael Bublé is the star in Bubly’s Super Bowl campaign. Bublé is seen sitting on the floor of a supermarket as he changes all the ‘Bubly’ canned drinks to ‘Bublé’. It forecasts a Buble vs Bublé commercial. The spot was created by Goodby, Silverstein and Partners.

Pizza Hut

Two gamers are seen explaining the “simple mathematics” of pizza in Pizza Hut’s 2019 Super Bowl teaser. The campaign shows one of the gamers explaining how $5 can get you a whole pizza. GSD&M was the agency behind the ad.

Pringles

Returning to the Super Bowl this year is Pringles, which has released two teasers featuring an Alexa-like robot admitting it can’t taste Pringles, only order them. The Grey Group is Pringles’ agency of record.

The full ad features two friends creating different flavours by stacking Pringles together. Amazon’s Alexa then eventually pipes up to say she will never know the joy of Pringles.
