Andrew Au joins design specialist Eight Inc as executive director for Asia

Andrew Au has joined strategic design specialist firm Eight Inc as executive director. Speaking to Mumbrella about how he landed this assignment, Au said: “Joe Pine, the author of The Experience Economy was a consultant to my last firm, Imagination. I engaged his services to do an internal workshop and we’d remained in touch over the years.

“Imagination shut down in Singapore at end 2017. Joe dropped me a note and asked what I was up to. I told him I was doing projects and consulting but was on the lookout for interesting roles. He put me in touch with (Eight Inc founder and CEO) Tim Kobe . I did a bit of research since I had not come across Eight Inc at the time and it got me super pumped and excited.

“I thought Imagination was at the top of its game, but this was a whole new strata.”

Au believes that what is missing in all the talk about experience and design is the environmental piece; an area that Eight Inc first began working on.

He said: “I have the opportunity to work directly for the founder who incidentally relocated to Singapore in 2010. He worked with Steve Jobs on designing the Apple retail programme. It’s like being one step removed from Steve Jobs: how could I pass that up?”

His role as executive director involves growth and business development. Like many in Eight Inc, Au points to his diversity of experience — he was previously with Hong Kong based Fluid Design, The Economist and Fortune — helping him bring different skillsets and viewpoints to the job.
